Let’s start with Cities. In the “Top 10 Cities”. Two Italian Cities make it into the top 10,  Florence at No.2 and Rome at No.6. Whilst in the “Top Cities in Europe”  Florence is No.1, Rome No.3, Venice No.7, and Siena No.10.

As for hotels, in the “World’s Best Hotels 2012″ category, the Hotel Santa Caterina, Amalfi is No.26 and the Palazzo Avino (formerly Palazzo Sasso), Ravello No. 45.

In the “Top Large City Hotels in Europe” category, the Four Seasons Hotel, Milan is No.6 and the Four Seasons Hotel, Firenze, Florence No.8.

In the “Top Small City Hotels in Europe” category, Ca’ Sagredo, Venice is No.4 and the Hotel Hassler, Rome No.8.

In the “Top Inns and Small Country Hotels in Europe” category, Il Falconiere, Cortona is No.10.

Finally, Italy’s best results are in the “Top Resorts in Europe” category, with seven out of the top ten resorts. No.1 Hotel Santa Caterina, Amalfi, No.2 Palazzo Avino (formerly Palazzo Sasso), Ravello, No. 5 Le Sirenuse, Positano, No. 6 Hotel Caruso, Ravello, No. 7 Villa d’Este, Cernobbio, No. 9 Il San Pietro, Positano and No.10 Hotel Splendido, Portofino.

Seven Italian Resorts in the Top Ten belongs to Italian Reflections

In this, the third post on the subject of the 2010 TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards, we come to the thorny subject of “Food & Wine”.

TripAdvisor readers have decided Piedmont’s food and wine regions are not in the Top 10 destinations in their Travelers’ Choice 2010 Best Destinations category of “Top 10 Food & Wine Destinations in Europe”. 

The Top 10 did include six Italian destinations such as Florence, Siena, Montepulciano, Sam Gimignano, Bologna, and Rome?. However its quite unbelievable that a region that contains some of the world’s greatest wines, some of Italy’s greatest scenery and is the birthplace of the Slow Food Movement did not get a mention. Ever heard of a wine named Barolo, Alba’s White Truffle or Turin’s Gianduiotti Chocolate, TripAdvisor readers???

Not Good Enough For Tripadvisor Readers? belongs to Italian Reflections

The top five destinations included Siena, Venice, Florence, the Vatican and Rome. Furthermore, they have voted that Isola Bella, Villa Pallavicino Park (Parco della Villa Pallavicino) and the Mottarone Cable Car are among the sights in and around Lake Maggiore not to be missed.

Good to see Piedmont had a Top 20 destination, Lake Maggiore came 19th, shame its the only one though! Come on TripAdvisor readers wake up!

Lake Maggiore at No.19 belongs to Italian Reflections

For great views of the countryside around Verona, Siena and Tuscany, some over-acting and a healthy dose of saccharin, David Paul Appell at Tripatini suggests checking out ‘Letters to Juliet’. 

Letters addressed to “Juliet, Verona” normally arrive at Juliet’s house in Via Capello. For over 70 years a constant stream of letters have been arriving where today 15 secretarial volunteers have the task to reply to every note and letter.
