This weekend sees “Canelli la Città del Vino”.
Established in 1999, Canelli la Città del Vino, is held on the last weekend of September in Canelli, Piedmont. It was here, in 1865, that Carlo Gancia created the first Italian spumante in his family’s cellars.
Canelli moves into festive mode for this weekend, when local produce weighs heavily on market stalls and the town’s foremost Wine Houses open their doors for guided tours and tastings to the magnificent historic wine cellars known as “underground cathedrals”.
These cellars are normally only accessible by appointment. However on certain weekends, including this weekend, they are open to the public without an appointment. Prices start from around €15. For more details visit the fab four at: www.bosca.it, www.contratto.it, www. coppo.it and www. gancia.it. If you can’t make it this weekend, make a note in your diary when the houses are next open. The next opportunity will be on the third weekend in October, followed by the second and third weekends in November, otherwise you’ll have to wait until next year, and the third weekends in May and June.
An opportunity not to be missed!

So it is correct that Canelli is the birthplace of the Asti.
The 15 Euros is the entrance fee to a cellar? Can one also buy wine on such occasions, and if yes, how much do the wines of Canelli cellars cost?
Gancia was the first to make Spumante, after visiting the Champagne region of France apparently. Entrance Fees vary depending on the time of year and which wine house, but 10-15 euro is the benchmark. The wines start around 10 euro for something decent and go up from there. Of course you can buy much cheaper wine at the local Cantina.
