Native New Yorker, author of historical thriller Verdi’s Dream, editor, translator (La vita è bella). I’ve lived in the Marche (Macerata) permanently for the past 13 years, but since 1963 in Florence, Milan and Perugia as well. Please add Macerata to your map–and tell me more about who founded and writes this site! Thanks.
I need advice on keeping my heating costs while living here. I can’t find anything online. I know from living here before in Florence as a student, our accommodations had limited times for the heat to be on. I remember it being on from 5pm to 11pm and then from 6am to 10am. I normally turn my mine on from 830pm to 1130pm and then on for an hour in the morning. what is the recommended usage to keep your utilities bill down without freezing to death?
Monique, Yes indeed – heating with gas can cost €6,000 over a winter and this one could be a bobby dazzler. The answer is to burn wood in a stove – not an open fire – and to get a stove with a back boiler which then heats the water in your tank. After that you send out the heat around the house by changing your thermostats to programmable ones which introduces tight timing control. That’s a bit brief but pretty much sums it up.
looking for members? i have a house in sardinia, one hour north of cagliari

Hello Janice, I see you have not joined yet? Would you like to?
I’m probably one of the longest-lived Expats – in Italy (mostly Florence but now Castiglione del Lago) since 1960 when I came to study the language!!
